Uma jornada musical iniciada no blues e no ragtime, passando pelo swing, bebop e o fusion. O aclamado documentário relaciona a música com a vida do povo americano e com a história dos Estados Unidos nos últimos 120 anos. Por meio de 2.400 fotografias, 75 entrevistas, 500 canções e 2.000 filmagens raras, evidencia alguns dos mais populares e originais talentos criativos dos Estados Unidos, incluindo Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker e Miles Davis.

Vale muito a pena ver, por causa da cuidadosa edição de imagens (fotografias e filmes da época), áudios (as principais gravações históricas), depoimentos de críticos, jornalistas e músicos.

O trabalho contou com a consultoria principal de Winton Marsalis, o que significa um viés dixieland ou revival. O time de comentaristas é unânime em adotar aquelas visões mitificadoras, o negócio todo de glorificar heróis e omitir da história o fato de que os caras eram uns malditos e que o jazz só ganhou respeitabilidade no meio cultural norte-americano muito a posteriori (meio parecido com o que aconteceu com o samba no Brasil, que tem uma historiografia semelhante).

Acho que andou saindo de novo, agora apenas importado, e com 10 ou 12 DVD’s a um preço exorbitante. Eu comprei quando ainda existia a versão pagável lançada no Brasil pela Som Livre – um box com 4 DVD’s e um total de 12 episódios que agora estão disponíveis aqui.

Very worth seeing, because of the careful editing of images (photographs and films of the time), audio (the main historical recordings), critical statements, journalists and musicians.

The work included the main consultancy Winton Marsalis, meaning a Dixieland revival or bias. The team of commentators are unanimous in adopting those mitificadoras visions, the whole business of glorifying heroes and history omit the fact that the guys were a damn and that jazz only gained respectability in the American cultural milieu much a posteriori (a bit like what happened to the samba in Brazil, which has a similar history).

I think he walked out again, only now imported, and 10 or 12 DVD's at an exorbitant price. I bought when there was still the payable version launched in Brazil by Som Livre - A box with 4 DVD's and a total of 12 episodes that are now available here.
