“Dizzy’s Party” foi gravado em 1976 com Dizzy Gillespie no trumpete, Ray Pizzi nos saxofones soprano e tenores, Rodney Jones na guitarra, Benjamin Franklin Brown no baixo elétrico, Mickey Rocker na bateria e Paulinho da Costa na percussão.

Dizzy Gillespie foi trumpetista famoso, tocou com inúmeras lendas do jazz, como Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Max Roach e Jonn Coltrane. Dizzy começou sua carreira tocando no clube Onyx em Nova Iorque em 1944, e foi um dos fundadores do estilo jazzístico be-bop. Seu nome foi em decorrência ao estilo frenético com que tocava o trumpete e suas caretas ao tocar o instrumento.

Dizzy Gillespie morreu em 1993 vítima de câncer e esta enterrado no cemitério Flushing no bairro Queens em Nova Iorque.

Paulinho da Costa, percussionista deste projeto, é um dos músicos brasileiros mais bem sucedido no exterior. Também gravou com lendas do jazz como Miles Davis, Quincy Jones e o próprio Dizzy Gillespie. Gravou músicas com outros artistas populares como Madonna, Sting e Michael Jackson.

O ponto alto da carreira deste percussionista brasileiro foi a gravação da canção “We are the world”, bem como “La isla bonita” de Madonna, e o álbum “Thriller” de Michael Jackson. Paulinho também contribuiu na gravação das trilhas sonoras dos filmes “A cor púrpura”, “O mágico insequecível” e “Footloose”.

Este disco de Dizzy Gillespie traz uma mistura de jazz com funk, mesclando ritmos e instrumentos. O álbum foi produzido por Norman Granz, um pioneiro em misturar jazz com outros estilos.
