Gene Krupa - Discografia

Gene Krupa foi um ícone da era swing, que lançou a bateria como instrumento de solo através de sua performance de showman e da sua técnica de improviso. Krupa nasceu em Chicago, no dia 15 de janeiro de 1909, e aos 11 anos já tinha começado a tocar bateria, porque era o instrumento mais barato na loja musical onde trabalhava. 

Krupa montou sua primeira banda em 1921, mas só começou os estudos de percussão em 1925, dois anos depois de terminar a high school. Depois de se filiar no sindicato local, ele começou a se apresentar em clubes para tocar nas jam sessions das madrugadas, ao lado de Mezz Mezzrow, Tommy Dorsey, Bix Beiderbecke e Benny Goodman. Suas influências musicais vão de Zutty Singleton e Baby Dodds até Chick Webb.

Krupa foi um inovador em muitos aspectos. Ele é até hoje considerado como o primeiro solista de bateria que interagia com outros músicos e que tirou o instrumento da função de um mero marcador de tempo. Ele também contribuiu para as inovações na bateria, auxiliando a Slingerland Drum Company no desenvolvimento de equipamentos.

Em 1929, Krupa se mudou para New York e em 1934 ele se integrava a banda de Benny Goodman, onde seu estilo impetuoso empolgava a platéia. Historiadores registram o seu solo em "Sing, Sing, Sing" no Carnegie Hall em 16 de janeiro de 1938, como o primeiro longo solo de bateria. 

Entretanto, um desentendimento no palco entre Krupa e Goodman naquele ano acabou com a parceria. Krupa formou sua própria banda, um sucesso de crítica e de vendas nos anos 40, uma banda que tinha outros destaques: o trompetista Roy Eldridge e a cantora Anita O'Day.

Krupa foi retirado do mercado musical em 1943, em função de ser flagrado com marijuana e de se envolver com uma menor de idade. Ele cumpriu 84 dias na penitenciária, mas acabou saindo devido a uma apelação. Ele se re-integrou à banda de Goodman, e depois trabalhou com Tommy Dorsey. 

No final de 1944, Krupa formou uma nova banda, junto com Charlie Ventura, Red Rodney e Don Gagerquist. Krupa dissolveu a banda em 1951 para participar do Jazz At The Philharmonic. Em 1954, ele e o baterista Cozy Cole fundaram uma escola de percussão em New York. 

Em 1959, o ator Sal Mineo representou o lendário baterista no filme "The Gene Krupa Story", que também contou na trilha sonora a presença de Krupa nos solos de bateria. Krupa morreu com a idade de 64 em Chicago no dia 16 de outubro de 1973.

Krupa formed his first band in 1921, but only started percussion studies in 1925, two years after finishing high school. His musical influences range from Zutty Singleton and Baby Dodds to Chick Webb.

Krupa was innovative in many ways. He is today regarded as the first drum solo that interacted with other musicians and took the instrument function of a mere timekeeper. He also contributed to innovations in battery, helping Slingerland Drum Company in the development of equipment.

In 1929, Krupa moved to New York and in 1934 he was part of the band of Benny Goodman, where his fiery style thrilled the audience. Historians record his solo in "Sing, Sing, Sing" at Carnegie Hall on January 16, 1938, as the first long drum solo.

However, a disagreement on stage between Krupa and Goodman that year ended the partnership. Krupa formed his own band a critical success and sales in the 40s, a band that had other highlights: the trumpeter Roy Eldridge and singer Anita O'Day.

Krupa was removed from the music market in 1943, due to being caught with marijuana and to engage with a minor. He served 84 days in prison, but ended up leaving due to an appeal. He re-joined the band of Goodman, and later worked with Tommy Dorsey.

In late 1944, Krupa formed a new band, along with Charlie Ventura, Red Rodney and Don Gagerquist. Krupa dissolved the band in 1951 to join the Jazz At The Philharmonic. In 1954, he and drummer Cozy Cole founded a percussion school in New York.

In 1959, actor Sal Mineo played the legendary drummer in "The Gene Krupa Story," which also featured on the soundtrack to the presence of the Krupa drum solo. Krupa died at the age of 64 in Chicago on October 16, 1973.
