Durante grande parte de sua carreira ela rivalizou com Ella Fitzgerald pelo posto de melhor cantora de jazz. Sarah deixou extensa discografia, gravando com muitos dos melhores músicos de jazz e também ocasionalmente com orquestras sinfônicas. Suas coletâneas de composições de Rodgers e Hart, e de Gershwin, são consideradas obras primas.
Ela veio cantar no Brasil muitas vezes, e numa delas cantou em dueto com o brasileiro Wilson Simonal. Sarah morreu em 3 de abril de 1990 aos 66 anos de idade.
Sarah Lois Vaughan was born in Newark, New Jersey, on March 27, 1924. As a child she studied piano and sang in church choir. In 1944 she was hired by Earl Hine's band. When her fellow singer Billy Eckstine left to form her own band she went along, and shortly thereafter she went on to a solo career as a jazz singer.
For much of her career she rivaled Ella Fitzgerald for the position of best jazz singer. Sarah left extensive discography, recording with many of the best jazz musicians and also occasionally with symphonic orchestras. His collections of compositions by Rodgers and Hart, and Gershwin, are considered masterpieces.
She came to sing in Brazil many times, and one of them sang in a duet with the Brazilian Wilson Simonal. Sarah died on April 3, 1990 at the age of 66.
