Iniciou seus estudos de piano clássico ainda menino, tendo sido aluno de Carmelita Lago. Na juventude, optou pelo jazz.
Iniciou sua carreira artística em 1960, apresentando-se em jam sessions realizadas no Little Club (Beco das Garrafas/RJ).
No ano seguinte, participou do III Festival Sul-Americano de Jazz, no Uruguai, com seu conjunto Brazilian Jazz Sextet. Ainda em 1961, estreou na boate Bottles (Beco das Garrafas/RJ), liderando o conjunto Hot Trio. Nessa época, ouvia os pianistas do jazz norte-americano, especialmente Horace Silver e Bill Evans. Gravou, nesse ano, o LP “Dance moderno”, contendo “Oba-lá-lá” (João Gilberto) e “Tristeza de nós dois” (Durval Ferreira e Maurício Einhorn), entre outras.
Em 1962, liderou o Sexteto Bossa Rio, com o grupo, apresentou-se no histórico Festival de Bossa Nova, realizado no Carnegie Hall de Nova York (EUA). Nesse mesmo ano, gravou o LP “Você ainda não ouviu nada”, com arranjos de Tom Jobim, considerado um clássico da bossa nova instrumental, e, com Cannonbal Adderley, o LP “Cannonbals bossa nova with Bossa Rio”.
Em seguida, dissolveu o Bossa Rio e formou, juntamente com Tião Neto (contrabaixo) e Edison Machado (bateria), o Sergio Mendes Trio, com o qual excursionou pela América do Norte, América do Sul e Japão.
Lançou, em 1964, os LPs “The swinger from Rio” e “Bossa Nova York”, com destaque para as canções como “Maria Moita” (Carlos Lyra e Vinicius de Moraes), “Batida diferente” (Durval Ferreira e Maurício Einhorn) e “Garota de Ipanema” (Tom Jobim e Vinicius de Moraes).
Fixando residência nos Estados Unidos, formou o conjunto Brasil 65, com a participação de Marcos Valle e Ana Maria Valle. O grupo atuou com essa formação durante sete meses.
Em 1965, gravou, com Wanda Sá, Rosinha de Valença, Bud Shunk e o Sergio Mendes Trio, o LP “Brasil 65 – Wanda de Sah featuring The Sergio Mendes Trio”.
No ano seguinte, formou o conjunto Brasil 66, com a cantora norte-americana Lani Hall e a brasileira Silvia Vogel (a atriz Bibi Vogel), substituída, depois, pela cantora norte-americana Karen Philip. Lançou, ainda em 1966, o LP “The great arrival”, atuando como solista de piano ao lado de uma orquestra, com arranjos de Clare Fischer, Bob Florence e Richard Hazard, e, com o Brasil 66, o LP “Herp Albert presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66”, que atingiu a vendagem de mais de um milhão de cópias e alcançou os primeiros lugares das paradas de sucesso norte-americanas, alavancado pelo sucesso da faixa “Mas que nada” (Jorge Ben).
Alterando diversas vezes a formação do conjunto, formado por músicos brasileiros e norte-americanos, apresentou-se em vários programas de televisão, ao lado de artistas como Perry Como, Jerry Lewis, Red Skelton, Fred Astaire, Danny Kaye e Frank Sinatra.
Em 1967, gravou, com o grupo, o LP “Equinox”, destacando-se “Bim bom” (João Gilberto) e a versão de Norman Gimbel para “Chove chuva” (Jorge Ben). Ainda nesse ano, apresentou-se na Casa Branca.
Em 1968, lançou o LP “Sergio Mendes favourite things”, registrando as canções “Ponteio” (Edu Lobo e Capinam) e “A banda” (Chico Buarque), entre outras. e o LP “Look around”, destacando-se “With a little help from my friends” (Lennon e McCartney), “The look of love” (Bacharach e David) e a versão de A. & M. Bergman para “O cantador” (Dori Caymmi e Nélson Motta), entre outras, além da faixa título e da canção “So many stars”, ambas de sua autoria em parceria com A. & M. Bergman.
Em 1969, com a participação dos cantores Pery Ribeiro e Gracinha Leporace, seu conjunto apresentou-se no Mercado Internacional do Disco e Editores Musicais (Midem), em Cannes (França), representando a delegação norte-americana. Em seguida, formou um novo conjunto, mantendo o mesmo estilo do anterior, atuando com sucesso não apenas como músico mas também como empresário. Ainda nesse ano, esteve no Brasil, onde realizou espetáculos na boate Sucata (RJ) e no Teatro Municipal (SP). Lançou, também em 1969, o LP “Crystal illusions”, com destaque para “Viola enluarada” (Marcos e Paulo Sérgio Valle), e o LP “Fool on the hill”, que incluiu “Upa neguinho” (Edu Lobo e Gianfrancesco Guarnieri), entre outras.
No ano seguinte, realizou uma apresentação na Expo 70, que gerou o disco “Live at Expo 70”, e gravou o LP “Ye-me-lê”.
Em 1971, lançou o LP “Stilness”, que incluiu a canção “Viramundo” (Gilberto Gil e Capinam), e o LP “País tropical”.
Em 1972, gravou o LP “Raízes”, interpretando “Promessa de pescador” (Dorival Caymmi), entre outras.
No ano seguinte, lançou os LPs “Love music” e “In concert”, gravado ao vivo com o Brasil 77.
Ainda nos anos 1970, lançou os LPs “Vintage 74” (1974), “I Believe” (1974), “Sergio Mendes” (1975), “Homecooking” (1976), “Sergio Mendes and the new Brasil 77” (1977), “Brasil 88” (1978), “Pelé – trilha sonora do filme” (1978), “Magic lady” (1979) e “Horizonte aberto” (1979), com destaque para a faixa-título, de sua autoria (c/ Guto Graça Mello e Paulo Sérgio Valle), e canções como “Tô voltando” (Maurício Tapajós e Paulo César Pinheiro) e “Fato consumado” (Djavan), entre outras.
Na década de 1980, lançou os LPs “Sergio Mendes” (1982), “Confeti” (1985), “Brasil 86” (1986) e “Arara” (1989).
Em 1992, gravou o CD “Brasileiro”, pelo qual foi contemplado, no ano seguinte, com o Prêmio Grammy. Lançou, em 1996, o CD “Oceano”, que incluiu canções como “Rio de Janeiro” (Guinga e Aldir Blanc), “Trilhos urbanos” (Caetano Veloso) e “Anos dourados” (Tom Jobim e Chico Buarque), entre outras. O disco foi indicado, em 1997, como o Melhor Álbum do Ano, na categoria “beyond jazz”, pela revista especializada norte-americana “Down Beat”.
Após 10 anos sem gravar, lançou, em 2006, o CD “Timeless”. O disco contou com a participação especial de Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, Eryka Badu, Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Guinga, Marcelo D2 e Will.i.am (Black Eyed Peas), entre outros. No repertório, releituras com batidas de hip hop de sucessos dos anos 60, como “Mas que nada” (Jorge Benjor), “Surfboard” (Tom Jobim) e “Berimbau” (Baden Powell e Vinicius de Moraes).
Apresentou-se na Praia de Ipanema no Reveillon de 2006/2007.
Lançou, em 2008, o CD “Encanto”, 39º álbum de carreira, que teve parte das gravações realizadas no estúdio Nas Nuvens, no Rio de Janeiro. contendo as canções “Acode”, de sua parceria com Vanessa da Mata, “The Look of Love” (Burt Bacharach e Hal David), “Funky Bahia” (Carlinhos Brown e Will.I.Am), “Waters of March” (Tom Jobim), “Odo-Ya” (Carlinhos Brown), “Somewhere in the Hills (O Morro não tem vez” (Tom Jobim e Vinicius de Moraes, vrs. Gilbert), “Lugar comum” (João Donato e Gilberto Gil, vrs. Jovanotti), “Dreamer (Vivo sonhando)” (Tom Jobim, vrs. Lees), “Morning in Rio” (Toninho Horta), “Y Vamos Ya” (João Donato e Joyce), “Catavento e girassol” (Guinga e Aldir Blanc) e “Água de Beber” (Tom Jobim e Vinicius de Moraes). O disco contou com a participação de Fergie (em “The Look of Love”), Will.I.Am (em “Funky Bahia), Ledise (em “Waters of March”), Carlinhos Brown (em “Odo-Ya), Natalie Cole (em “Somewhere in the Hills”), Jovanotti (em “Lugar comum”), Lani Hall (em “Dreamer”), João Donato e Juanes (em “Vamos Ya”), Gracinha Leporace (em “Catavento e girassol”) e Vanessa da Mata (em “Acode”).
Em 2010, lançou o CD “Bom tempo”, contendo as faixas “Caminhos cruzados” (Tom Jobim e Newton Mendonça), “Só tinha de ser com você” (Tom Jobim e Aloysio de Oliveira), “País tropical” (Jorge Ben), “The real thing” (Stevie Wonder), “Caxangá” (Milton Nascimento e Fernando Brant), “Maracatu atômico” (Jorge Mautner e Nelson Jacobina), “Emoriô” (João Donato e Giberto Gil), “Maracatu (Nation of love)” (Moacir Santos) e outras. O disco contou com a participação dos bateristas Mike Shapiro e Vinnie Colaiuta, dos baixistas Nathan Watts e Alphonso Johnson, e dos guitarristas Paul Jackson Jr. e Kleber Jorge, além da participação especial de Milton Nascimento (em “Caxangá”), Carlinhos Brown (em “Emoriô”), Seu Jorge (em “Maracatu atômico” e “Maracatu (Nation of love)”) e Gracinha Leporace (em “Maracatu (Nation of love)”).
Lançou, em 2011, o CD duplo “Celebration – A musical journey”, uma retrospectiva de sua carreira, celebrando 50 anos do lançamento de seu primeiro álbum. No repertório, canções que marcaram sua trajetória artística, entre as quais “Garota de Ipanema” (Tom Jobim e Vinicius de Moraes), “Mas que nada” (Jorge Benjor), “Scarborough Fair” (Simon e Garfunkel) e “The Fool on the Hill” (John Lennon e Paul McCartney).
Em 2014, lançou o CD “Magic”. Gravado entre Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles e Salvador, o trabalho contou com participações de nomes como Carlinhos Brown (na faixa “One nation”, que abre o disco e que foi gravada para a Copa do Mundo), Maria Gadu (“Meu Rio”), Ana Carolina (na música “Atlântica”), Milton Nascimento (em “Olha a rua”) e Seu Jorge (na faixa “Sou eu”). O CD trouxe uma mistura de ritmos como funk, bossa nova e samba. O instrumentista aproveitou os festivais de verão na Alemanha, na Bélgica, na França e na Holanda para divulgar seu trabalho.
Em fevereiro de 2020 lançou “In the key of joy”, pela Concord Records. Entre os destaques do álbum, as participações do rapper MC Common e de Buddy, também rapper, na faixa título. A dupla colombiana Cali Y Dandee foi a convidada da faixa “La Noche Entere”. Em “Muganda”, a voz da cantora brasileira e esposa de Sérgio Gracinha Leporace, que também participa com solo na última faixa do disco – “Tangara”. O álbum de participações possui ainda as faixas “Samba in Heaven”, com o cantor do “The Voice EUA” Sugar Joans, a instrumental “Romance in Copacabana” e “This is it”, com Hermeto Pascoal trazendo os temperos da sua música livre com os vocais de Gracinha Leporace.
Em abril de 2021, ano em que Sérgio Mendes comemorou 80 anos, foi lançado no Brasil, pela HBO Go, o documentário “Sérgio Mendes: no tom da alegria (In the key of joy)”, que conta desde a infância do músico em Niterói até a participação no Rock in Rio em 2017. O documentário têm depoimentos de John Legend, Pelé, Will.i.am, Carlinhos Brown, Harrison Ford e Quincy Jones.
