Milton + Esperanza é um álbum de estúdio colaborativo dos cantores e compositores Milton Nascimento e Esperanza Spalding, lançado em 9 de agosto de 2024 pela Concord Music.

Antecedentes

Após anunciar sua aposentadoria dos palcos, Milton promoveu a turnê A Última Sessão de Música. Fora dos palcos, o artista continuou lançando trabalhos, incluindo um álbum colaborativo com a dupla sertaneja Chitãozinho & Xororó em 2023. Nesse mesmo período, o filho e empresário do artista, disse a Spalding que era hora de gravar um álbum com Milton.

Produção

A ideia do álbum surgiu a partir da admiração mútua entre os artistas e do incentivo de Wayne Shorter, morto em 2023, que foi um mentor para Spalding e uma figura importante na carreira internacional de Milton. As gravações ocorreram no Rio de Janeiro com a participação de vários instrumentistas e músicos, entre eles Maria Gadú, Paul Simon, Tim Bernardes, Orquestra Ouro Preto, Carolina Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Lula Galvão e Guinga.

As primeiras faixas inéditas surgiram com o incentivo de Shorter, que estimulou Spalding a explorar novas sonoridades em homenagem a Milton. Entre as canções, destaca-se "Wings for the Thought Bird", composta para o disco, além de reinterpretações de clássicos do repertório de Milton, como "Cais" e "Morro Velho". Além disso, o álbum inclui uma homenagem a Shorter com a faixa "When You Dream", trazendo ainda a participação especial da viúva do saxofonista.

Milton + Esperanza foi anunciado em agosto de 2024, pela Concord Music. Na mesma semana de lançamento, o duo participou do Tiny Desk, da NPR Music.

O álbum teve recepção positiva da crítica especializada. O periódico The Guardian atribuiu 5 estrelas, nota máxima, descrevendo a voz de Milton Nascimento como "um barítono lindamente rico e carregado de vibrato que é o foco de uma colaboração animada com a baixista e compositora Esperanza Spalding".

A revista de música All Music atribuiu a nota 90/100, apontando "No centro de tudo isso estão Nascimento e Spalding, cuja interação sorridente ajuda a fazer com que Milton e Esperanza se sintam ao mesmo tempo o ápice de uma carreira monumental e a continuação de um legado musical."

Milton + Esperanza is a collaborative studio album by singer-songwriters Milton Nascimento and Esperanza Spalding, released on August 9, 2024 by Concord Music.

Background

After announcing his retirement from the stage, Milton promoted the A Última Sessão de Música tour. Off the stage, the artist continued to release work, including a collaborative album with the country duo Chitãozinho & Xororó in 2023. During this same period, the artist's son and manager told Spalding that it was time to record an album with Milton.

Production

The idea for the album came from the mutual admiration between the artists and the encouragement of Wayne Shorter, who died in 2023, who was a mentor to Spalding and an important figure in Milton's international career. The recordings took place in Rio de Janeiro with the participation of several instrumentalists and musicians, including Maria Gadú, Paul Simon, Tim Bernardes, Orquestra Ouro Preto, Carolina Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Lula Galvão and Guinga.

The first unreleased tracks were created with the encouragement of Shorter, who encouraged Spalding to explore new sounds in homage to Milton. Among the songs, "Wings for the Thought Bird", composed for the album, stands out, as well as reinterpretations of classics from Milton's repertoire, such as "Cais" and "Morro Velho". In addition, the album includes a tribute to Shorter with the track "When You Dream", also featuring a special guest appearance by the saxophonist's widow.

Release and reception

Milton + Esperanza was announced in August 2024, by Concord Music. In the same week of its release, the duo participated in NPR Music's Tiny Desk.

The album was well received by critics. The Guardian gave it 5 stars, the highest rating, describing Milton Nascimento's voice as "a beautifully rich, vibrato-laden baritone that is the focus of a lively collaboration with bassist and composer Esperanza Spalding."

The music magazine All Music gave it a score of 90/100, noting "At the center of it all are Nascimento and Spalding, whose smiling interplay helps make Milton and Esperanza feel at once the culmination of a monumental career and the continuation of a musical legacy."

On the specialized website Metacritic, the album is rated 91/100, indicating universal acclaim.
